Wolverhampton Evening Preview

The Wolverhampton card this evening might not stop the nation, but it does contain a number of races where small margins – a couple of pounds here, a well-timed ride there – are likely to decide matters. As ever around here, those who get first run turning in often look like geniuses, while those stuck behind a wall of horses suddenly resemble philosophers questioning life choices.

17:30 Wolverhampton – White Umbrella

The 0-65 handicap over 7f looks a good starting point and White Umbrella is taken to land it. Christopher Kellett’s mare hinted at a return to form last time when finishing third here, and she now steps back up in trip carrying around 9st 4lb, which is actually a couple of pounds lower than she was competing from towards the end of last season.

That may not sound dramatic, but at this level it’s the difference between being competitive and merely making up the numbers. With previous course form over this distance and a run under her belt, and with Ben Sanderson likely to keep things simple in the saddle, she looks ready to strike — assuming Wolverhampton doesn’t do what Wolverhampton does best and trap her behind three horses going nowhere.

18:00 Wolverhampton – Ramon Di Loria

This could go the way of Ramon Di Loria, who returns under very similar conditions to his latest run. He carries around 9st 6lb again, so the handicapper has effectively left him alone and said “prove it”.

Marco Botti’s gelding has been holding his form well and tends to race handily, which is usually half the battle here. With Hollie Doyle booked, if he gets a clean run into the straight, he may not need to improve much — just avoid the sort of traffic problems that turn a good ride into an unfortunate story.

18:30 Wolverhampton – Arlecchino’s Rex

A typically tight handicap where Arlecchino’s Rex could be worth siding with. He runs off roughly 9st 5lb again, but meets a couple of these rivals around 2lb better than when they last met.

That swing might not look much on paper, but over the final furlong it can suddenly feel quite significant. His recent efforts suggest he’s not far away, and with a capable all-weather rider likely to keep him out of trouble early, if things fall into place — which is always the delicate part of the plan — he could easily outrun his odds.

19:00 Wolverhampton – Marinakis

Marinakis is one who may be better treated than he first appears. He lines up carrying around 9st 3lb, which is a couple of pounds lower than earlier in the winter, bringing him closer to some of the principals.

If the race is run at a proper gallop, and with a patient ride likely to suit, he could be one of those quietly making ground when others have already emptied the tank. The sort that isn’t obvious until suddenly he is — usually just as everyone has committed to something else.

19:30 Wolverhampton – Alasrae

Alasrae comes here in good form, but now has to cope with around 9st 7lb, a few pounds higher than for his recent success. That doesn’t make life impossible, but it does make it slightly less comfortable.

Trained by Kevin Frost and likely ridden by William Carson, he’s clearly in form and if allowed to race prominently, he could still prove hard to pass. The question is whether something lurking nearby is slightly better treated — and in races like this, there’s almost always one waiting to spoil things.

20:00 Wolverhampton – Luna Beaux

Luna Beaux is given another chance under conditions that clearly suit. Adrian Wintle’s filly carries around 9st 2lb, still higher than when winning impressively earlier in the year, but her latest run suggested she is starting to handle that mark.

If she gets a clear run turning in, she could easily make this mark look workable again. With a rider who knows how to time things late around here, the danger, as ever, is not ability — it’s whether she gets the gap at the exact moment she needs it, rather than two strides too late when everything has already happened.

20:30 Wolverhampton – Phaedra

The closing race looks a good opportunity for Phaedra, who now runs from around 9st 5lb and is much better treated than last time when effectively racing from out of the handicap.

Now with Joey Ramsden and likely to be ridden by a jockey who is comfortable delivering a late run, that alone puts her on far fairer terms, and her recent run suggested she has adapted well to these conditions. A slightly stronger test should suit, and if she gets into a rhythm early, she could take plenty of stopping.

Provided, of course, she doesn’t end up needing a miracle to get a clear run — which, around here, is always part of the equation whether anyone likes it or not.
