The Lion King….. of Mali. Wednesday 1st April Racing from Kempton – its no joke

Kempton Evening Preview

Kempton this evening, where everything looks controlled, tidy and predictable… right up until the point someone kicks too soon and turns a winning position into a lesson in timing. It’s a track that rewards patience disguised as confidence — and punishes anything resembling panic.

18:00 Kempton – Billy Mill

Billy Mill looks an interesting one at a price, carrying around 9st 4lb, which puts him a few pounds lighter than some of the main contenders.

From the Simon & Ed Crisford yard, with Harry Davies likely taking a bit of weight off, he’s effectively even better treated than he looks on paper. That could be important late on if this turns into a proper finish.

He’s not the obvious one — but then again, at Kempton, the obvious one often finds trouble at exactly the wrong moment.

19:00 Kempton – Lion Of Mali

Lion Of Mali looks one of the more straightforward runners, carrying around 9st 7lb, very similar to his latest run.

From the Charlie Johnston yard, with Joe Fanning likely to ride, he should be ridden positively without overdoing it. If he settles into a rhythm, he could control things from a handy position.

The only danger is doing just a fraction too much too early — which Kempton has a habit of exposing with ruthless efficiency.

19:30 Kempton – Parisian Scholar

Parisian Scholar looks fairly treated, carrying around 9st 5lb, which keeps him competitive with most of these.

From the Andrew Balding yard, with Oisin Murphy likely booked, he should be delivered late. Murphy’s strength here is timing — waiting just long enough before asking the question.

If he gets a clear run, he could be one of those arriving late when others have already committed.

20:00 Kempton – Madman

Madman looks a lively contender, carrying around 9st 6lb, which is very similar to recent runs.

From the George Boughey yard, with Billy Loughnane likely riding, he should be positioned just off the pace. If he turns for home travelling, he may simply prove the most straightforward option.

Not complicated, not flashy — just effective. Which at Kempton is usually exactly what you want.

20:30 Kempton – Em Four

Em Four looks a solid each-way angle, carrying around 9st 3lb, which gives him a bit of an edge compared to some of the principals.

From the Richard Hughes yard, with Finley Marsh likely to ride, he should be ridden with patience. If the race develops late, he could be one of those staying on strongest.

At this track, arriving late is often far more useful than arriving early and regretting it.

Best Bet of the Day

19:00 Kempton – Lion Of Mali

Carries a workable weight, tactically straightforward, and from a yard/jockey combination that tends to get these right.

If he settles early and isn’t asked too soon, he looks the one most likely to get it done — without turning it into unnecessary drama.
